There’s a hot dog on a racetrack. An angler fish is breathing down his neck. You have money on the bear. This is Hot Streak, and it might be the most silly fun you’ve had at a game table all year.

What’s the Game?

Hot Streak is a betting and racing game from CMYK Games, designed by Jon Perry. You and up to eight other “hard luck gamblers” are placing wagers on a mascot race – a field featuring four of the most charmingly off-brand competitors you’ll ever cheer for: Hurley the not-a-hotdog, Gobbler the bear, Dangle the angler fish, and the Queen Mum. The game unfolds over three races, with players collecting or losing paper money after each one.

How It Plays

Here’s what makes Hot Streak so clever: all your decision-making happens before the race starts. Players study the visible race deck – which shows some of the movement cards for each mascot – and draft their betting tickets in a snake order. You can bet safe or flip your ticket to the risky side for higher potential payouts. Then each player secretly adds one card from their hand into the race deck, the deck gets shuffled, three cards are buried face-down, and the race begins.

From that moment on, you’re just watching. Cards flip one at a time, mascots lurch forward, knock each other over, veer sideways, or – inexplicably – turn around. The illusion of control you had from studying that deck? It evaporates hilariously. After three races, players check their earnings against a fortune-telling outcome in the rulebook. There’s no traditional winner. Everyone just finds out what kind of gambler their life choices have made them.

Who’s It For?

Hot Streak is a spirited race for game nights with mixed crowds. The rules take about two minutes to explain, it plays 2–9+ players, and it works just as well with non-gamers as it does with hobbyists. The 6+ age rating means it’s very family-friendly, but the humor lands hardest with older players who appreciate the absurdity. If your group loves social energy, shouting at the table, and games that feel like an event – this one delivers.

CMYK has built a reputation for games that are as thoughtful as they are playful, and Hot Streak is a perfect example of their craft. The rollout racetrack is a mechanical delight. The chunky vinyl mascot figures are a delight. And the design finds a quirky sweet spot: enough decision-making to feel earned, loose enough that anything can happen. It’s one of those rare titles that makes every player – winner or not – want to play again immediately.
